How to Make a Chocolate Chip Cookie in the Microwave
Making this cookie in a mug is the perfect way to bake chocolate chip cookies in the microwave. Trust me – I’ve tried forming dough into balls and cooking it in the microwave, and it really doesn’t work without the mug.
It’s similar to making a mug cake, only the ingredients are a little different so that we end up with a cookie that’s chewy instead of moist and fluffy like a cake.
Here’s the ingredients:
- 1 ½ tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 large egg yolk (discard the egg white)
- 1 drop (or ⅛ teaspoon) vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- pinch of salt (optional)
- 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips
You can use white sugar if that’s all you have on hand, but I found the brown sugar provided a much better flavor. I tried making this with both milk and the egg yolk for moisture. I found that the egg yolk provided a moister, more cookie-like texture whereas with milk it ended up a little drier and a little less chewy. However – if you really don’t feel comfortable using the egg yolk you could use 1 tablespoon of milk instead.
First we whisk together the butter, sugar, egg yolk & vanilla in a large mug. Then stir in the flour and salt, followed by the chocolate chips. The consistency should be like chocolate chip cookies – thick and definitely not runny. Then microwave on medium power for 60-90 seconds. It’s really important to make sure your microwave is on medium power and not high power, otherwise, it can overcook and the chocolate chips can bake and burn (which will smell terrible!).
I also find it’s better to be slightly underbaked instead of overbaked because then it turns out moist and gooey, and you don’t risk it getting dried out 😉
This easy chocolate chip cookie in a mug is dangerously delicious. It’s ready in no time, so easy to make, and you get a warm, “out of the oven” chocolate chip cookie in no time.

Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Mug
Ingredients
- 1 ½ tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 large egg yolk discard the white
- ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add the butter to a large mug and microwave until melted.
- Remove from the microwave and whisk in the brown sugar (I use a fork for this).
- Ensure that the butter isn't too hot (otherwise, you'll scramble the egg), then whisk in the egg yolk and vanilla extract.
- Stir in the flour (the mixture should be thick like cookie dough), then stir in the chocolate chips.
- Microwave on medium power (50-70%) for 60-90 seconds or until the top looks just set. Do not microwave on high power, otherwise, the cookie can become hard and the chocolate can burn. I check after 60 seconds to see, then add an extra 15 seconds as needed.
- Enjoy immediately, optionally with a scoop of ice cream.
Doing this recipe tommorrow. Your oatmeal cookies were the best ever. Never could make an oatmeal cookie come out right. Love you so far🥰
Made this but instead of the chocolate chips I added a spoon of nutella in the middle. It was DELICIOUS!!
Oh man – I need to make this with Nutella next time!
Wow chewy and yummy just like a cookie and it totally hit the spot! Made it twice and the second time added peanut butter on top to melt over – YUM! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
Delicious. Best one of these I tried yet. I tried it with the milk instead of egg. Next time I’m going to try egg and see which way I like best. The salt is a good choice. I didn’t have vanilla and it was still fine
I just baked this in the oven on 350 in a muffin pan and it turned out DELICIOUS!! Will definitely be making again! 🍪
