This fudgy, gooey Nutella mug cake is somewhere in between a warm brownie and slice of your favorite chocolate cake. The cake batter is made with Nutella, and there’s a dollop of Nutella in the middle to give you a warm pocket of chocolate hazelnut spread as you dig in. Made in the microwave and ready in under 10 minutes.

If I could officially declare Nutella as its own food group – I 100% would. So today I’m sharing this easy Nutella mug cake (because I assume you love Nutella just as much as I do). It’s quick to make, extra fudgy, filled with Nutella and tastes delicious with a scoop of ice cream for the perfect single-serving dessert.
The ingredients are whisked together in the mug that you plan to eat it in, and then it goes straight into the microwave to “bake”. You end up with a delicious chocolate treat that’s somewhere in between a brownie and a fudgy chocolate cake. I like to add an extra dollop of Nutella in the middle before it goes into the microwave. That way, you get a warm pocket of Nutella as you dig in with your spoon.
How to Make Nutella Mug Cake
For this recipe, you’ll need:
- 5 tablespoons Nutella
- 1 large egg – this can be substituted with 2 tablespoons milk and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- plus an extra spoonful of Nutella for dolloping in the middle
Make sure you have a large mug. I recommend choosing a mug that’s very wide, as I find that the cake will bake more uniformly.
- In the mug you plan to use, whisk together the Nutella and egg. I do this with a fork.
- Then whisk in the flour, cocoa and baking powder until you no longer see lumps of cocoa or pieces of egg. This can take a minute or 2.
- Drop a small dollop of Nutella into the middle of the cake.
- Pop the cake into the microwave and microwave for 90 seconds on medium power – do not use high power, as it can burn the edges of the cake, but leave the middle raw. After 90 seconds, carefully check the cake. If the top still looks raw, microwave for additional 15 seconds on medium power until the top is slightly springy to the touch.
How to Make 2 Mug Cakes
This recipe can easily be doubled. Double all the ingredients, and whisk them together in a bowl. Pour/spoon the batter evenly between two mugs and microwave as directed in the recipe.
This Nutella mug cake is fudgy, gooey and such a delicious chocolate single serving cake! Serve it with ice cream, or an extra drizzle of Nutella.Â
