If I could officially declare Nutella as its own food group – I 100% would. Because if you ask me, Nutella is probably the most delicious thing ever invented. So today I’m sharing this easy Nutella mug cake (because I assume you love Nutella just as much as me). It’s super easy to make, extra fudgy, filled with Nutella and tastes delicious with a scoop of ice cream for the perfect single-serving dessert.
As shocking as it might sound (knowing that I have a baking blog and all) I don’t always have homemade treats around the house. After taste testing what I bake, we typically give it away to friends or Jay’s coworkers (I think he has some job security now). So when the chocolate craving hits, I often need a quick, easy chocolate recipe.
And that’s where this Nutella mug cake recipe comes in. It’s ready in 5 minutes, there are no leftovers, and it’s deliciously chocolatey.
How to Make Nutella Mug Cake
For this recipe, you’ll need:
- 3 tablespoons Nutella
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
First – make sure you have a large mug. The cake will rise a lot as it bakes – so even if your mug only looks about ¾ full it can overflow. In your mug, whisk together the Nutella and egg. Then stir in the flour, cocoa & baking powder. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds – or until the top looks set. The cake (and cup) will be hot when they come out of the microwave so just be careful not to burn your tongue!
I find that the narrower your mug is – the more it will rise. So if your mug is wide and not quite as tall it may not end up as sky high as mine photographed is.
If you want to make this Nutella mug cake without the eggs, you can substitute the egg for 3 tablespoons of milk.

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons Nutella
- 1 large egg*
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
Instructions
- In a large mug whisk together the Nutella & egg.
- Whisk in the cocoa, flour & baking powder.
- Microwave for 1 minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds, or until the top looks set. **Be careful when taking the mug out of the microwave - it will be hot!
