I’ve made a lot of chocolate cookies in my day, but I don’t think you can ever have enough chocolate. So today I’m sharing the easiest recipe ever – chocolate cake mix cookies. They turn out perfectly fudgy and super soft, and even if you’re a little apprehensive about baking, you can easily make these cookies.

How to Make Chocolate Cookies from Cake Mix

You only need 4 ingredients to make these cookies:

  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix – Devil’s food cake or chocolate fudge work perfectly
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips – you can use semi-sweet, white chocolate, dark chocolate, or really whatever you prefer

Some recipes for cake mix cookies use oil – but I found that cake mix cookies with butter have a chewier, more cookie-like, and less cake-like texture. If you only have oil on hand, you can use 1/3 cup oil instead of 1/3 cup butter.

The dough is definitely sticky, so I absolutely recommend using a cookie scoop. If you don’t have one, then lightly grease a tablespoon and your palms to reduce sticking.

If your box of cake mix is 15oz (which is what I used), you’ll need 1/3 cup of butter. But if it’s an 18oz box, I recommend using 1/2 cup butter instead. Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter,, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 15oz box chocolate cake mix*
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips,, plus more for dotting the tops with

Instructions 

  • Preheat the oven to 350F degrees and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or baking mats.
  • In a large bowl using beat together the butter, eggs and chocolate cake mix.
  • Mix in the chocolate chips.
  • Using a cookie scoop* spoon the dough into balls about 1-1.5 tablespoons in size and place 2 inches apart on the cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the tops look set. Optionally, place a few chocolate chips on top of each cookie. 

Notes

*If your cake mix box is 18 oz, use 1/2 cup melted butter instead.
**If you don't have a cookie scoop, lightly spray your palms and a tablespoon with cookie spray then form the dough into balls about 1 tablespoon in size. The dough will be sticky, which is why I recommend lightly greasing your hands and the spoon.

  1. These are gone before they cool! Like soft batch cookies. So much better than any other cake mix cookie I’ve tried!

  2. We are on our second batch of these cookies. We found them a bit bland, so we kicked it up a notch by adding addind shredded coconut, chooped walnuts, a pinch of salt, and a dash of coconut extract. OMG!!! So, so good.

  3. I was a little worried at first when I was making these cookies. The dough was tough but also very sticky and a little stretchy, almost gummy. It was very difficult to work with. And then baking them, after ten minutes they were still completely raw in the middle. I had to bake them for about 12 minutes to get them to set up. But the results don’t lie. They were perfect. So soft, yet chewy, a little fudgy and they tasted like the perfect combination of cake and cookie. 5 stars. Any trouble I had making them was 100% worth it.

    I have made these several times with chocolate chips and they are wonderfully delicious. Today I made them with Andes mint chocolate baking chips. OMG!! If you like mint and chocolate these are to die for.

    I made your recipe but didn’t put the chocolate chips in, baked them, let them cool, then flipped them over and frosted them with vanilla frosting and put them in the fridge for the frosting to harden a bit, and they are delicious! So yummy!

    Better than I expected, I added a little over
    1/3 cup melted butter.. accidentally. But
    they still baked very nicely. I added some
    semi-sweet chocolate chips. My teenage
    son says they’re good. I will make them
    again.

  8. Hi Recipe looks amazing and I am plaI can make the dough in advance an leave it in the fridge for 1-2 days or freeze the dough balls and make them a couple at a time.

    Only thing that I would add is that I leave the cookies on cookie sheet for about 1 to 2 minutes to cool before I remove them. But definitely the best cookies ever
