The recipe only requires 4 ingredients, so it's the perfect easy chocolate cookie recipe for whenever the craving hits.

I’ve made a lot of chocolate cookies in my day, but I don’t think you can ever have enough chocolate. So today I’m sharing the easiest recipe ever – chocolate cake mix cookies. They turn out perfectly fudgy and super soft, and even if you’re a little apprehensive about baking, you can easily make these cookies.

How to Make Chocolate Cookies from Cake Mix

You only need 4 ingredients to make these cookies:

  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix – Devil’s food cake or chocolate fudge work perfectly
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips – you can use semi-sweet, white chocolate, dark chocolate, or really whatever you prefer

Some recipes for cake mix cookies use oil – but I found that cake mix cookies with butter have a chewier, more cookie-like, and less cake-like texture. If you only have oil on hand, you can use 1/3 cup oil instead of 1/3 cup butter.

Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies are soft and chewy with a delicious chocolate flavorFirst, you’ll beat the butter, eggs and cake mix. Then mix in the chocolate chips. Form the dough into balls, place 2 inches apart on a lined cookie sheet, and bake.

The dough is definitely sticky, so I absolutely recommend using a cookie scoop. If you don’t have one, then lightly grease a tablespoon and your palms to reduce sticking.

If your box of cake mix is 15oz (which is what I used), you’ll need 1/3 cup of butter. But if it’s an 18oz box, I recommend using 1/2 cup butter instead. Feel free you use your favorite brand of cake mix – I’ve made these chocolate cake mix cookies with Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker, and supermarket brands with great results.A plate of cake mix chocolate cookies with chocolate chips.

I definitely have a soft spot for my favorite double chocolate cookies from scratch, but these cake mix chocolate cookies are definitely some stiff competition. They’re everything you could want in a cookie:

  • fudgy
  • soft
  • chewy
  • even a little gooey
  • super easy to make

So delicious and easy! Like mini fudge brownies, I shared this recipe with everyone I knew. It was too good not to.

Awful. Cookies came out mush every time, I used out, butter, didn’t add chocolate chips, set the oven to 375, used a different oven. No matter what I did, it came out mush.

  3. Delicious & chewy! However, mine did not spread like the ones in the picture. What do you recommend for that?

    1. I’d try pushing the cookie dough balls down with your fingers before baking. You could also remove a few tablespoons of the cake mix before mixing in the butter and eggs.

My husband is diabetic, so I used Pillsbury Sugar Free Cake Mix. I also found sugar free choc. chips. Also I smush them down a little to spread them out. Super!!!!

Made these today for the first time. I followed the recipe exactly as written. Oh my goodness!! Absolutely delicious! They were so chewy, gooey, and soft! Even better than I had thought they would be. Going to make them for family Christmas get together next week. I am keeping this batch for myself! 🙃

I tried this recipe and everyone that’s tried them said they were the best chocolate cookies I’ve ever made so i decided to keep using this recipe. I just let them think I made them from scratch lol.

I made these following the directions exactly, using a Duncan Hines Devils Food Cake mix and some Belgian chocolate chip chunks from Aldi. I cooked them for the full 10 minutes to make sure they were done. They came out AMAZING! Very soft and chewy, which I love. The large chocolate chunks make these extra gooey and chocolatey. I will definitely be making these again! So easy and SOOO yummy! Thank you for sharing the recipe!

Using butter instead of oil is genius! It makes a huge difference I normally use 1/3 cup veggie oil but now I won’t do that again. Baking time will always vary depending on your oven, I made 1 1/2 inch balls and cooked at 350 for 10 minutes, I added an additional 5 minutes because my cookies were big.

The top should look super matte.

  7. I’ve made these before and the were good but too soft. I used this one exactly how it written aaaaaaannnnnd WOOOOOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE! No one would know these came from a cake mix unless you told them. My son absolutely loves them!

  8. Ok. Making these and decided to make them in bar form. I greased a 8×8 glass dish and pit the dough in. It’s currently baking, so we shall see. Also I only had a small amount of chocolate chips, so it’s a mix of chocolate chips and butterscotch and candies like m&ms.
